Te mapa
Yanaul is a town in the north-west of Bashkortostan, near the border with Udmurtia. It grew up around a railway station in the early twentieth century, and the map still shows it. The tracks cross the town in a strong straight line, with a regular grid of streets on either side and the station area at its centre.
Beyond the rows of houses, the land is a mix of fields, woodland and small rivers, typical of this part of the Urals foothills. Detached houses with gardens make up much of the town, so from above the grid looks open and evenly spaced. Larger blocks are kept for apartment buildings and industrial sites near the railway.
A Yanaul map poster suits the town's clear, practical layout. Drawn in simple lines, the railway, the straight streets and the scattered green edges make a calm, ordered composition. It shows how a small Russian town is actually organised, not how it appears in a guidebook, and every street can be traced.
The rail line crosses the town in one long straight stroke and divides it into two sides. The rest of the street grid was arranged around it.
Residential streets run in parallel rows of similar length, lined with private houses and gardens. This gives much of the map a steady, even pattern.
At the outskirts, the grid gives way to fields and patches of woodland. They soften the town's outline and frame it with open space on the page.

Koteā ko Yanaul
For people who grew up in Yanaul and moved to Ufa, Kazan, Moscow or further, the town's streets are a strong personal memory. A map on the wall keeps the route from home to school, or to the station, in view every day.
