Te mapa
Yei lies in the south of South Sudan, in the greener, hillier part of Central Equatoria near the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Yei River passes close to the town. From above, the settlement spreads along its main roads, with a market centre, compounds and small plots fading into wooded farmland and low hills.
The town grew as a trading point on routes between Juba and neighbouring countries, and the surrounding region is known for its fertile soils and agriculture. Like much of South Sudan, Yei has been through long periods of conflict and displacement. On a map, though, what stands out is the pattern of everyday life: roads, tracks and homesteads spread across a well-watered landscape.
A Yei map poster keeps things simple: the river, the road junction at the town's centre and the fine texture of the countryside around it. It is a quiet, respectful way to keep a place close.
The river that gives the town its name runs nearby through the green country, and its winding line brings a natural curve into the frame.
Roads towards Juba and the border areas meet at Yei, which explains the town's role in trade and gives the map its main structure.
Farm tracks and scattered homesteads form a soft, even pattern around the town and hint at the agricultural land of Equatoria.
