Yevlakh lies near the geographic centre of Azerbaijan, on the Kura River where it crosses the broad Kura-Araz lowland. The land here is almost completely flat, so roads, railways and the river govern the town's layout rather than terrain. From above, it forms a compact, fairly regular pattern of streets set against open fields and irrigation channels.
Its importance comes from its connections. Yevlakh is a key junction on the railway between Baku and Tbilisi, and major roads towards the northwest and towards Karabakh meet here. This role as a crossroads is easy to see in the long, straight transport lines that converge on the town from several directions.

Railway junction
The Baku–Tbilisi line runs through the town with a branch line heading northwest. Tracks, sidings and station yards form a strong linear element across the map.
