Yüksekova lies in Hakkâri province in the far southeast of Turkey, close to the Iranian border. Its name means high plain, and that describes it well. The town stands on a wide, level basin at high altitude, surrounded by some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Because the plain is so level, the town has been able to spread with fairly regular streets, unlike many mountain settlements that cling to slopes.
