Te mapa
Zgorzelec lies in Lower Silesia on the east bank of the Lusatian Neisse, facing the German town of Görlitz across the river. Until 1945 the two were a single town, and the new border drawn along the Neisse after the war divided it. That history is written into the shape of the place, with streets on both banks running down to the water and meeting it directly.
The river bends through the centre, and the bridges between the two towns are the key points of the composition. The Old Town Bridge, a footbridge reopened in 2004, connects Zgorzelec directly with the historic centre of Görlitz. On the Polish side, a district of mostly nineteenth and early twentieth century streets rises away from the river, with parks along the bank.
A Zgorzelec map poster can be read as half of a pair or as a complete map in its own right. Either way, the Neisse runs through it as a calm open band, and the street patterns on each side are closely matched but separated. The philosopher Jakob Böhme once lived in a house on this bank of the river.

This footbridge connects Zgorzelec with the old centre of Görlitz. It appears as a thin line across the water, small on paper but central to the story of the two towns.
Green spaces line parts of the eastern bank. They leave open areas between the streets and the water, softening the edge of the town on the map.

People hang this map because it tells a story without words: one town, two countries and a river in between. It suits anyone with roots on either bank, and anyone interested in how borders reshape ordinary places.
