Zweibrücken lies in the southwest of Rhineland-Palatinate, close to the border with Saarland and not far from France. The Schwarzbach river winds through the town, and the name, meaning two bridges, points to early crossings over it. The town was the seat of the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, and the palace remains at its heart. Zweibrücken is also known for its large rose garden, one of the best-known in Germany.
