Zwevegem lies in West Flanders, just southeast of Kortrijk, and includes several former villages. On a map it looks like a loose arrangement of centres linked by roads through flat farmland. A long, straight canal cuts across the whole area.
The canal is the Bossuit–Kortrijk canal, which links the Scheldt and the Leie. Zwevegem also has a strong industrial history. The wire manufacturer Bekaert was founded here in 1880, and the former power station site known as Transfo has been kept as industrial heritage.
