Accrington sits in a valley in east Lancashire, and from above its streets show the town's industrial origins. Long rows of terraced houses run in parallel lines up the hillsides, with larger mill and works sites near the valley floor. The town centre gathers around a railway viaduct that crosses above the streets, while open moorland and farmland on the higher ground surround the built-up area.
The town is known for Accrington brick, a hard, dense red engineering brick made from local shale and widely used in building. It is also home to Accrington Stanley, a football club whose name is well known far beyond Lancashire. Both belong to a town that grew quickly during the cotton and engineering boom of the nineteenth century.
An Accrington map poster captures the pattern of terraces spreading up the valley sides, the main roads leading towards Blackburn and Burnley, and the curve of the railway through the centre. Parks and green slopes appear as open spaces between the streets, giving the map a clear sense of the valley's shape.
