Achern Map Poster
Achern lies in the Ortenau district of Baden-Württemberg, at the point where the flat Upper Rhine plain meets the western slopes of the Black Forest. The small river Acher flows through the town, and its course gives the centre a gentle curve. The old core is compact, with a main street and narrow side streets, surrounded by later residential areas.
The map shows two different landscapes on either side. To the west lie the Rhine valley railway, the A5 motorway and wide, flat farmland. To the east, the ground rises into vineyards, orchards and wooded hills, with villages tucked into side valleys. Achern is also known for the Illenau, a large nineteenth-century psychiatric institution whose grounds now house civic uses.
The Achern map poster captures this transition in one frame: straight transport lines and fields on one side, winding roads and hills on the other, with the river town in between. In black and white it has a clear sense of direction, like a snapshot of the Baden landscape as it climbs from the Rhine to the forest.
