Ajaccio Map Poster
Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and lies on the northern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, one of the island's wide bays facing west. The town is squeezed between the sea and the hills, so its map stretches along the coast. The old quarter and citadel sit on a small point by the harbour, and newer districts climb the slopes behind.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born here in 1769, and the city still carries his name on its main streets and squares. To the west, the coast road continues toward the Pointe de la Parata and the Sanguinaires islands, a line of small, rocky islets at the mouth of the gulf. They are one of the best-known views on the island.

The coastline extends west in a long, jagged line, ending in the islets. In black and white, the gulf becomes a large, calm surface and the streets seem to lean toward it.
