Alaca Map Poster
Alaca is a district centre in Çorum Province, on the high, rolling plateau of central Anatolia. From above the town is compact and fairly regular, a cluster of blocks and short streets with a few main roads leading out into the countryside. Around it the landscape opens into large fields whose boundaries form a loose patchwork and give the map a quiet, spacious border.
The district is known far beyond Turkey for Alacahöyük, an archaeological site where excavations uncovered rich Early Bronze Age tombs and later Hittite remains, including a gate flanked by sphinxes. The bronze standards found there became an emblem of Anatolian archaeology. Hattusa, the Hittite capital, is also in Çorum Province, which draws people interested in ancient history to this part of the plateau.
The town itself stays modest, and that is part of its appeal on paper.
