Alfreton Map Poster & Print
Alfreton is a market town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England, between Derby and Chesterfield. It stands on high ground, and from above its old centre forms a compact knot of streets on the hilltop. Roads radiate outward toward surrounding villages, and residential estates spread down the slopes. The A38 and the nearby M1 frame the town to the south and east.
The town has medieval origins, and local tradition links its name to Alfred the Great, though historians treat that connection with caution. Its later growth came with coal mining and industry, which shaped the villages around it. Alfreton Hall, a country house set in parkland, remains one of the town's notable open spaces.
