Alton Map Poster & Print
Alton climbs steep limestone bluffs on the Illinois side of the Mississippi, downstream from the mouth of the Illinois River and a few miles above the point where the Missouri joins. Because of the hills, its streets are nothing like a flat Midwestern grid. They bend, double back and break into short blocks, which makes an intricate map for a city of this size.
Two major structures define the riverfront. The Clark Bridge is a cable-stayed span opened in 1994, and the Melvin Price Locks and Dam lies just downstream. Upriver, the Great River Road follows the bluffs past a large painting of the Piasa bird, a creature from local legend, on the rock face.
Alton's history carries weight. The abolitionist editor Elijah Lovejoy was killed here in 1837 while defending his press, and the last Lincoln–Douglas debate was held in the city in 1858. Miles Davis was born in Alton. An Alton map poster brings all of this back to the lines of the bluffs, the river and the bridge.

The cable-stayed Clark Bridge crosses the Mississippi to Missouri. Its long straight deck is drawn as a sharp line across the wide river.
Locks and dam
Just downstream, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam spans the river with gates and lock chambers, a precise engineered shape set in moving water.
