Arumuganeri lies in Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu, near the coast of the Gulf of Mannar and not far from the temple town of Tiruchendur. The land here is low and flat, and the coast is lined with salt pans.
Salt production is a major part of local life, and the evaporation ponds show up on satellite images as a patchwork of rectangles. The region's chemical industry has also developed around this resource. The town itself is compact, with streets clustered around a main road that links it to the coast and to neighbouring towns.
