Ash Shaţrah lies in Dhi Qar governorate in southern Iraq, on the Shatt al-Gharraf, a waterway that flows from the Tigris south toward the marshes. From above, the town follows the water, with a compact centre along its banks and neighbourhoods spreading into the flat land around it.
The surrounding plain is crossed by irrigation canals and dotted with fields and palm groves, their long, straight lines contrasting with the gentle curves of the Gharraf. An Ash Shaţrah map poster places the town inside this carefully divided agricultural landscape.
