Ayakudi lies in Dindigul district in western Tamil Nadu, a short distance from the temple town of Palani and close to the foothills that rise towards the Western Ghats. On a map, the town is a small, irregular cluster of streets surrounded by farmland, with roads linking it to nearby villages and to Palani itself. The hills to the west form a distinct edge to the landscape.
The area around Ayakudi is well known in Tamil Nadu for its guava orchards, and the fields and plantations around the town give the map a patchwork texture. Irrigation tanks, the traditional reservoirs of south India, appear as rounded shapes among the fields. The town has also become known in the state for its free coaching centre that helps local students prepare for government exams.
