Bad Saulgau sits in the rolling country of Upper Swabia, between the Danube and Lake Constance. The old town at its centre is compact, with streets arranged along a main axis and a few cross lanes. Newer residential areas spread out around it in looser, curving streets, and then the map opens into fields, small woods and country roads leading to nearby villages.
The town is known for its thermal spa, which gave it the prefix Bad, and it lies on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, which links the churches and monasteries of the region. On the map, the spa and park grounds on the edge of town show up as a softer, more open area among the housing blocks.
