Ben Taieb lies in the eastern Rif, in Morocco's Oriental region, not far inland from the Mediterranean coast around Nador. The land here is broken into ridges and ravines, and the town's layout responds to it: a main road runs through the centre, and side streets branch off wherever the ground allows, rather than settling into any regular grid.
Like much of the Rif, the area has long ties to emigration, and many families have relatives in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and elsewhere in Europe. Newer houses spread along the roads and hillsides beyond the older centre, a pattern of growth shared by many towns across the region and clearly visible when the town is seen from above.
