Bhātpāra Map Poster & Print
Bhātpāra lies on the east bank of the Hooghly in North 24 Parganas and forms part of the chain of towns that runs north from Kolkata. From above, it is a long, thin strip. The river forms one edge and the railway line runs parallel a short distance inland. Most of the town fits between them, with narrow streets running from the tracks down to the water.
Industry shaped this layout. From the late nineteenth century, jute mills lined the Hooghly, and their compounds and worker housing still occupy large rectangular blocks along the bank. Between the mills, the older residential lanes are irregular and densely packed. Ghats lead down to the river, and ferries cross to the west bank.
A Bhātpāra map poster reflects both parts of the town's past. Long before the mills, Bhatpara was known as a centre of Sanskrit learning and home to scholarly families. On the map, the river is a wide pale band along one side, and the railway is a firm straight line along the other, with the town's lanes packed in between.
