Bhattiprolu lies in the Krishna River delta in coastal Andhra Pradesh, a landscape of flat, fertile land crossed by irrigation canals. On a map the canals are as important as the roads: long, straight channels cut through the fields and pass close to the town, while roads often follow their embankments. The town itself forms a compact cluster within this highly organised agricultural landscape.
Bhattiprolu is known for its ancient Buddhist stupa, excavated in the nineteenth century, where relic caskets were found bearing inscriptions in an early script now called the Bhattiprolu script. These inscriptions are important for the study of early writing in South India, which gives this modest town a place in historical scholarship well beyond its size.
