Bilbao Map Poster & Print
Bilbao grew up along the Nervión estuary, known locally as the Ría, which winds through a narrow valley toward the Bay of Biscay. On the map, the river curves through the city, and steep green hills close in on both sides. Its bends split the city into distinct parts, each with its own shape and street pattern.
On the right bank, the Casco Viejo is the medieval core, organised around the Siete Calles, or seven streets. Across the river, the nineteenth-century Ensanche of Abando spreads out in a planned grid with diagonal avenues. Downstream, on former industrial land beside the water, stands Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum, opened in 1997.
A Bilbao map poster shows how an industrial port turned itself into a cultural city while keeping its geography intact. Bridges cross the Ría at short intervals. The dense old town, the orderly Ensanche and the riverside promenades are clear to see, and the hills of Artxanda and the surrounding slopes frame everything.

The seven parallel streets of the medieval Casco Viejo form a compact block on the right bank. They are easy to pick out against the broader grid across the river.
Abando Ensanche
The planned expansion district spreads out in a regular grid with diagonal avenues. It is a deliberate contrast with the tight lanes of the old town.
