Bou Hadjar lies in El Tarf province, in the northeastern corner of Algeria, not far from the border with Tunisia. This is one of the wetter and greener parts of the country, with wooded hills, cultivated valleys and a network of streams. On the map, the town appears as a compact settlement set into this rolling terrain rather than spread across a plain.
The streets respond to the land around them. Roads curve to follow contours and valleys, and the built area gathers along a few main routes before thinning into farmland and scrub. The result is a town plan without a rigid grid, shaped more by gradient and water than by planning on paper, and it gives Bou Hadjar an irregular, organic outline.
