Çarşamba lies east of Samsun on Turkey's Black Sea coast, on the lower Yeşilırmak river where it crosses its delta to the sea. The name means Wednesday in Turkish, after the weekly market that gave the town its identity. Samsun's airport sits on the coast within the district, north of the town.
The Çarşamba plain is one of the most fertile farming areas in the region, known for hazelnuts, rice, vegetables and fruit. From above, the land is almost perfectly flat, divided into narrow plots by drainage ditches, canals and field roads. The river winds through the middle, its bends clearly visible against the straight lines of the fields.
A Çarşamba map poster shows the town gathered around the river, with bridges linking the two sides and streets spreading in a loose grid. Beyond the built-up area the farm pattern takes over, like finely ruled paper. With a wider frame, the coastline and the edge of the delta add a strong horizon line to the north.
