Cisnădie lies just south of Sibiu, where the Transylvanian plain meets the first folds of the Cindrel mountains. The town was founded by Transylvanian Saxons, who knew it as Heltau, and its medieval layout survives. Long rows of houses line streets that radiate from a central square, and the fortified evangelical church stands at the middle, behind its ring of defensive walls.
From above, the old core is easy to pick out. It is an oval of streets and courtyards, with narrow plots running back from the street frontage in the long, regular strips typical of Saxon villages. Newer housing and former textile works spread to the north toward Sibiu, while the southern edge soon meets rising, wooded ground.
