Colchester stands on a low hill above the River Colne in Essex, and its centre is still defined by the line of its Roman walls. From above, the old town forms a compact rectangle with the High Street running east to west through it. The river loops around the northern and eastern edges, and newer suburbs spread out in every direction beyond the walls.
Known to the Romans as Camulodunum, Colchester is often described as Britain's oldest recorded town, and its walls are the oldest surviving town walls in the country. The Norman castle keep, built on the foundations of a Roman temple, is the largest of its kind in Europe. Colchester was granted city status in 2022.
A Colchester map poster shows two thousand years of history in a single plan: the walled core, the castle park, the river curving past the old town and the port area at the Hythe. Around it, the pattern of modern suburbs and the University of Essex campus complete the picture.
