Chelmsford lies in the heart of Essex, about thirty miles northeast of London, where the rivers Chelmer and Can meet. From above, the town centre is a compact cluster of streets near the confluence, with the rivers and their green banks running through it and the railway passing along a raised viaduct.
It is the county town of Essex and gained city status in 2012. Its parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is also known as the place where Guglielmo Marconi opened his wireless factory, and the city describes itself as the birthplace of radio.
A Chelmsford map poster shows the old core, the river corridors and the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation heading east toward the coast. The ring roads and suburbs extend outward, and Hylands Park and other open spaces leave large blank areas at the western edge.
