Cornellà de Llobregat is part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, lying on the left bank of the Llobregat River just beyond the city boundary. Its map is densely built: compact residential blocks, a network of busy streets and several rail and metro lines, all bordered on the west by the river's straightened channel and by major road corridors.
Much of the city grew rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, when workers from across Spain arrived for jobs in local industry. Today it is home to the stadium of RCD Espanyol, and its centre keeps a small historic core around the old church and the Castell de Cornellà. Parks and sports grounds break up the dense fabric of housing.
