Darende Map Poster & Print
Darende lies in the west of Malatya province in eastern Anatolia, on the Tohma river. The town stretches along the valley, with streets following the water and orchards filling the lower ground. On a map the built-up area appears as an elongated shape pressed between the river and the rising slopes, with roads leaving along the valley toward Malatya and the surrounding villages.
Just outside town the Tohma cuts a narrow canyon through limestone, one of the region's best-known natural sites, with walking paths along the gorge. Darende is also known for the tomb and complex of Somuncu Baba, a fifteenth-century Sufi figure, which draws many visitors. Nearby, the Gürpınar waterfall is another popular stop along the river.
