Dehāqān is a city in Isfahan Province, south-west of Isfahan on the high plateau where the land begins to rise towards the Zagros Mountains. The region is dry, and settlement depends on careful use of water. On a map the town appears as a compact built area surrounded by cultivated land, with the bare slopes of the uplands not far away.
The street network combines older, irregular lanes in the historic core with straighter, wider avenues added in recent decades, a pattern common to Iranian towns of this size.
