Dhanpuri lies in Shahdol district in eastern Madhya Pradesh, in the coal-bearing country of the Sohagpur field. The town does not form one compact core. It spreads in clusters along roads that connect residential colonies, markets and mining areas. Railway lines and access tracks cross the landscape, and patches of trees and open ground separate one neighbourhood from the next.
Coal mining has shaped the town. Much of the employment and the layout of the settlement grew up around collieries run by South Eastern Coalfields, and neighbouring towns such as Burhar are closely linked to Dhanpuri. The wider region has plateaus, forest and river valleys, and the town sits within that setting rather than apart from it.
