Erāttupetta lies in the eastern part of Kottayam district, where the lowlands begin to rise toward the Western Ghats. On a map the town clusters around the Meenachil River. Roads follow the river valley, and hillier ground to the east shows where the mountains begin.
The town has long been a trading centre for the surrounding plantation country, especially rubber, which covers much of the land around it. It is also a gateway to the hill station of Vagamon, and roads climb from Erāttupetta into the Ghats toward it. The river gives the town its central line and much of its character.
An Erāttupetta map poster captures that valley setting. The streets gather where the land is flatter, the Meenachil River winds through the middle, and the road network loosens into curving lines as the terrain rises eastward.

Roads climb eastward from the town into the Western Ghats toward Vagamon, and they show up as winding lines across the hillier part of the map.
