Farrokh Shahr sits on a high plateau in the Zagros Mountains of west-central Iran, right beside Shahrekord, the capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. On a map the two places read almost as one urban area, joined by roads across a short stretch of open land. The town is compact. Its streets are packed tightly at the core and spread out as they reach the surrounding fields.
The province is one of the highest-lying in Iran, and that height shapes what the map shows. Around the built-up area the linework thins quickly into farmland and bare ground.
