Feira Grande lies in the agreste of Alagoas, the zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão of northeastern Brazil. The name means large fair, and it points to the role of weekly markets in towns of this region, where farmers bring produce and livestock in from the countryside. The town itself is compact, its streets gathered around a small centre.
From above, the urban area forms a modest grid that turns slightly irregular where it follows the terrain. Past the last blocks, the landscape opens into fields, pastures and dirt roads leading to rural communities.
