From above, Forécariah looks like a compact town set in open, low country. A small cluster of streets sits at its centre, and past it the roads thin into tracks between fields, patches of woodland and the wetlands of the coastal plain. The map has none of a capital's density. Its lines are few and spaced apart, which gives the drawing a calm, open look.
Forécariah is the administrative centre of the prefecture of the same name in the Kindia region, in southwestern Guinea near the border with Sierra Leone. The land between the town and the Atlantic is low and cut by creeks and estuaries edged with mangrove, and much of it is used for rice. That watery, finely divided landscape gives the edges of the map their texture.
A Forécariah map poster keeps all of this in plain black on white: the tight core of the town, the roads leaving it, and the looser pattern of land and water around it. Nothing is added for decoration. The picture comes from the ground itself, a regional town sitting in the flat country between the hills of the interior and the coast.

Coastal lowlands
Toward the sea the plain flattens into creeks, estuaries and mangrove fringes. On the map these show up as fine, irregular lines, a clear contrast to the straighter roads.
Border country
The prefecture runs down to the Sierra Leone frontier, and the roads through the area link Conakry with the south, crossing the map as long lines through rural land.
