Gap Map Poster
Gap sits in a broad basin in the Southern Alps and serves as the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes. It is often described as the highest prefecture town in France, at around 735 metres. The small Luye river crosses the town, and the Durance valley lies a short distance away. On a map, a dense, rounded old centre sits in the middle of a basin ringed by mountain roads.
The historic core is a knot of narrow, curving streets around the cathedral, with the later town spreading out on all sides. Main routes head in several directions toward the passes and valleys of the region. Gap has been a regular stop on the Tour de France and is a base for skiing, walking and cycling in the surrounding mountains.
