General Alvear lies in the south of Mendoza province, in the dry country east of the Andes. Irrigation made farming possible here. On a map the town is a regular grid of square blocks with a central plaza, and wide avenues run out into the countryside. Around it, farm plots are laid out in long rectangles along irrigation channels.
The area depends on water from the Atuel River, and its farms have long produced wine grapes and fruit. That shows clearly from above. The town is the densest part of a wider pattern of straight lines, in which roads, canals and field boundaries all follow the same geometry across the flat land.
A General Alvear map poster shows how thoroughly people have shaped a dry landscape.
