Terrain-following roads
Local roads trace the edges of valleys and level ground, so the street network bends and branches with the shape of the land.

关于地图
Hitokawame Map Poster & Print
Hitokawame is in Aomori Prefecture, at the northern tip of Japan's main island of Honshu, on the side of the prefecture that faces the Pacific. This part of Tohoku alternates between small river valleys, farmed plateaus and low wooded hills. On a map the settlement is a modest network of streets fitted to that terrain rather than laid over it.
In northern Japan, towns and villages often grow along roads that follow rivers and the edges of level ground, and rice fields and orchards fill the spaces between them. The result is a map in which the built-up area looks like a thread or a small cluster. It is set against the finely divided pattern of fields and the looser lines of forest roads.
A Hitokawame map poster is a subtle, personal subject. It is less a portrait of landmarks than a record of a landscape of streets, fields and slopes. In black and white the contrast between the denser residential lanes and the open agricultural land around them gives the composition a quiet, balanced feel that suits a modern interior.

Field patterns
Agricultural land around the settlement is divided into small parcels, which adds a fine, regular texture to the areas between roads.
Wooded hills
Low forested rises around the area show as open space crossed by only a few winding tracks, and they frame the composition.

为什么选Hitokawame
一张有意义的地图
For someone with roots in eastern Aomori, a map of this particular place carries more meaning than any image of a famous city. It keeps a home landscape present, wherever in Japan or the world you now live.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be changed, so the poster can mark a family house, a date or a return visit. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the $9 HD files or order a printed poster.
