Kuma River through town
The river is wide enough to read as a strong band across the centre of the map, with bridges stitching the northern and southern districts together at regular points.

关于地图
Hitoyoshi Map Poster & Print
Hitoyoshi lies in a basin in southern Kumamoto Prefecture, with mountains on every side. The Kuma River, one of the fastest-flowing rivers in Japan, crosses the basin from east to west and runs straight through the town. Streets fill the flat ground on both banks, joined by a series of bridges, and the built-up area stops sharply at the foot of the surrounding slopes.
The Sagara clan ruled this area for roughly seven centuries, which is an unusually long line for a single domain. The stone walls of their castle still stand on the south bank of the river. The town is also known for Aoi Aso Shrine, whose thatched buildings are designated a National Treasure, for its hot springs, and for Kuma shochu, a rice spirit distilled locally.
A Hitoyoshi map poster works because of the contrast between the dense town and the empty land around it. The river gives the map a broad, curving spine, the castle grounds form a clear shape beside the water, and the rail lines and roads leading out of the basin follow the valleys between the hills.

Castle site by the water
The former Sagara castle grounds sit on the south bank where a tributary meets the Kuma, a compact outline that marks the historic heart of the town.
The basin edge
Where the flat land ends, the street network stops almost abruptly against the mountains, so the town appears as a clearly bounded shape inside an open frame.

为什么选Hitoyoshi
一张有意义的地图
Hitoyoshi is a place people remember well: a river trip, a stay at a hot spring inn, family roots in the basin. A map of it is quiet and legible, a single river town held within its hills, and it suits a calm room.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can be personalised, for instance with a date or a place name in Japanese. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as $9 digital files in six print sizes or as a printed poster.
