Hoddesdon lies in east Hertfordshire, along the western side of the River Lea. The town's map shows a long historic high street running north to south, with residential areas spreading out on either side. To the east, the Lea Valley opens into a network of river channels, lakes and marshes, while the A10 bypass forms a clear line to the west.
The town grew as a stopping point on the old road north from London, and its centre still has the outline of a traditional market town. The Lee Valley Regional Park runs along its eastern edge, with former gravel pits now turned into lakes, and the remains of Rye House, linked to a seventeenth-century plot against the king, stand nearby.
