Iisalmi Map Poster & Print
Iisalmi is a town in North Savo, in the lake district of eastern Finland. It is home to the Olvi brewery, one of the country's best-known independent breweries. The town is also linked to the Battle of Koljonvirta in 1808 during the Finnish War, fought at the strait just outside the centre.
On the map, water dominates. The town centre sits on land between lakes, including Porovesi, and it connects to the surrounding areas by bridges over straits and narrows. The shorelines are long and irregular, with peninsulas, bays and islands, and residential neighbourhoods extend along them into the forest.

The narrow waterway near the centre is crossed by a bridge and associated with the 1808 battle. It is a short but significant gap in the land.
Shoreline neighbourhoods
Residential areas spread along peninsulas and bays and meet forest at their edges. This creates a loose, stretched pattern typical of Finnish lake towns.
