Jānjgīr lies in the rice-growing plains of central Chhattisgarh and is the headquarters of Janjgir-Champa district, with the town of Champa a short distance away. On a map the town looks loose and low. A main road corridor runs through it with houses clustered alongside, and the small rectangles of tanks and ponds typical of the region are scattered all around.
The town is best known for an old Vishnu temple, often called the Nakta Mandir, which was never finished and still stands without a complete spire. It is one of several historic temple sites in this part of Chhattisgarh and gives Jānjgīr a place on regional heritage routes.
