Jāsim lies in the Daraa governorate of southern Syria, on the Hauran plain, a broad volcanic tableland known for its dark basalt stone and fertile soils. The terrain is largely open and gently rolling, and on a map the town appears as a compact core with streets spreading outward in an irregular pattern.
The town has a long past. It is traditionally considered the birthplace of Abu Tammam, one of the great classical Arabic poets of the ninth century. Around the town, roads lead toward neighbouring Hauran villages, and the surrounding land is divided into fields and orchards typical of this farming region.
