Kâhta lies in southeastern Turkey, in Adıyaman Province, on gently rising ground north of the large reservoir formed by the Atatürk Dam on the Euphrates. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets gathered around a few main roads, with farmland and open hillside around it.
The town is best known as the usual base for visits to Mount Nemrut, where the monumental stone heads and tomb mound of the ancient kingdom of Commagene stand on the summit. The routes north of Kâhta climb into the Taurus foothills in a series of winding curves.
A Kâhta map poster works well at two scales: close in, the dense blocks of the town itself; farther out, the fingers of the reservoir to the south and the mountain roads to the north. Both show a place set between lake and highlands.
