Kakegawa lies in western Shizuoka, between the mountains and the Pacific coast. The historic core sits below a small castle hill, where Kakegawa Castle's keep was rebuilt in wood in 1994 using traditional methods. On a map, the central streets gather near the castle grounds, and a river runs close by through the town centre.
The town was a post station on the old Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto, and it remains on the main transport corridor: the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Tokaido Main Line stop here. The surrounding hills are covered in tea plantations, and Kakegawa is known across Japan for its deep-steamed green tea.
A Kakegawa map poster combines a castle town layout with the strong straight lines of modern rail. The old streets bend around the castle hill, the railway and Shinkansen cut straight across the valley, and tea fields spread over the hills in soft, parallel rows.
