Kangasala Map Poster & Print
Kangasala lies just east of Tampere in the Pirkanmaa region, in a landscape shaped by the last ice age. Long gravel ridges called eskers run across the land, and lakes fill the hollows between them. The town centre sits on one of these narrow strips with water on both sides, and the map shows how closely the streets follow the lie of the land.
Large lakes such as Längelmävesi and Roine lie to the east and north, with irregular shorelines full of bays, points and islands. Roads run along the ridges because they are the only dry, level routes. The scenery inspired Zachris Topelius's poem A Summer Day in Kangasala, which was later set to music and is still widely sung in Finland.
A Kangasala map poster is mostly about water and ridges, with the town's streets and neighbourhoods threaded between them. In black and white it makes a strong composition: the lakes become large open shapes and the land reads as a series of narrow, deliberate lines, like a drawing made with very few strokes.
