Karīmganj sits in the Barak Valley of southern Assam, on the bank of the Kushiyara River, which here forms the international border with Bangladesh. The map makes that edge unmistakable: the town's streets end at a broad, winding river, and across it lies another country. Few places show a border as plainly as a line of water drawn against a street grid.
The Longai River also passes near the town before joining the wider river system, and the low, wet landscape around Karīmganj is full of ponds, channels and paddy fields. The built-up area stretches along the riverbank rather than spreading evenly, so the plan has an elongated, linear shape that follows the water.
The town has long been a trading and administrative centre for the valley, and in 2024 its district was renamed Sribhumi.
