Open-pit terraces
The mine forms concentric benches stepping down into the ground. In black and white its rings are one of the most graphic features on the map.

关于地图
Kovdor Map Poster & Print
Kovdor lies in the southwest of Murmansk Oblast, north of the Arctic Circle and close to the border with Finland. On a map the town is a compact grid of apartment blocks and streets, set in a landscape of lakes, bogs and forest that fills most of the sheet.
The town was built around mining. A large open-pit mine nearby extracts iron ore along with other minerals including apatite, and from above the pit and its spoil heaps form a striking pattern of concentric terraces and flat-topped shapes, clearly different from the natural terrain.
A Kovdor map poster puts two kinds of landscape side by side. The irregular lakes and wetlands of the north contrast with the precise, man-made rings of the mine, and the small, orderly town sits between them.

Lakes and wetlands
Irregular lakes and boggy ground surround the town in every direction. Their shapes break up the sheet and show the northern landscape clearly.
Planned town grid
Kovdor's centre is a regular layout of streets and residential blocks. Its order stands out against the wild terrain around it.
