Koz'modem'yansk sits on the high right bank of the Volga in the Mari El Republic, where the river widens into the Cheboksary Reservoir. It was founded in 1583 as a fortress during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. On the map the town is stretched along the shore, with an older grid near the water and newer districts on the higher ground.
The terrain gives the map its drama. Steep slopes and ravines cut down to the river, and streets have to either follow the contours or climb them directly. On the opposite bank, the low-lying left side of the Volga is flat and wooded, so the river divides two very different landscapes.
