Lorient Map Poster
Lorient sits on the south coast of Brittany, where the Scorff and Blavet rivers flow into a wide, sheltered roadstead that opens to the Atlantic. On a map the city occupies the land between the rivers, bordered by water on several sides, with docks and harbours along the shore and the citadel of Port-Louis guarding the entrance opposite.
The city was founded in 1666 as a base for the French East India Company, which gave it its name, L'Orient. During the Second World War the Germans built a large submarine base at Keroman, and the city itself was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing. Rebuilt afterwards, Lorient has a largely postwar centre and hosts the Festival Interceltique every August.
A Lorient map poster reveals a city defined by water: river estuaries, docks, fishing harbour and the long outline of the roadstead. The rebuilt centre's straighter streets contrast with the curving shore and the massive rectangular blocks of the former submarine base.
