Maicao lies in the arid interior of the Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia, a short distance from the border crossing into Venezuela. The land is flat, dry and open, so the town spreads out on a wide, fairly regular grid of blocks that becomes looser and more scattered towards the scrubland at its edges.
Maicao has long lived from cross-border commerce, and the busiest streets near the centre are lined with shops and warehouses. Main roads run out towards Riohacha and the border, forming the few strong lines that cross the grid. Past the built-up area the map is almost empty: tracks, dry streams and scattered settlements.
The city is also known for a large Arab community of mostly Lebanese descent. Its Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Mosque is among the largest in Latin America. A Maicao map poster shows a frontier town simply, as a dense grid set on a wide, pale desert plain.
